Individuals with ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders have difficulty with the Executive Function/Pre frontal cortex portion of the brain. This is the Conductor for the brain’s symphony of planning, evaluating, organizing….in short, thinking! The ever-changing “music of the brain” is often referred to as Dynamic Intelligence.
The good news is that parents and teachers can help these individuals strengthen Executive Function and develop improved Dynamic Intelligence through deliberate planning, monitoring, executing and reviewing activities related to real life events. Parents and teachers can demonstrate what the critical contents of a good plan are, determine what needs to be taken into consideration for the plan, show how to implement the it, determine what went well and what didn’t, and then decide how to alter that plan for future similar endeavors. Finally, students can develop their own working knowledge notebooks to record what they learned to develop a written memory bank of experiences.
